What plays a 4K UHD disc

You need a 4K player or a console with a 4K disc drive, plus a 4K TV, ideally with HDR. A standard Blu-ray player cannot read a 4K disc.

Own a PS5 with a disc drive? Then you already own a 4K player. Just put the disc in.

What plays, and what does not

  • Plays: the PS5 with a disc drive (the Digital Slim and Pro once you add the drive), Xbox Series X, Xbox One S and One X with the “Blu-ray Player” app, and any 4K UHD Blu-ray player.
  • Does not play: the PS4 and PS4 Pro, the original Xbox One, Xbox Series S, the Xbox One S All-Digital, the original 2020 PS5 Digital Edition (no drive can be attached) and a standard Blu-ray player.

Console or a standalone player?

A console is enough to start: the 4K picture with HDR10 is the same. A standalone player is quieter, starts faster, has a remote and is the only way to see Dolby Vision or HDR10+.

HDR in plain words

Every 4K UHD disc has HDR10, so a 4K TV with HDR shows it beautifully. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are a bonus: you see them when the disc, the player and the TV all support them. Consoles play HDR10; Dolby Vision or HDR10+ needs a standalone player.

Samsung supports HDR10+, LG and Sony support Dolby Vision, and Philips, Panasonic and Hisense support both.

Sound and region

A soundbar connected through the TV needs eARC to play lossless Dolby Atmos. 4K UHD discs are practically always region-free, so they play on any 4K player, wherever they were released.
