What is a steelbook?
A steelbook is a metal case for a disc, with its own artwork and often a limited run. Inside is the same 4K film as in the standard edition, in packaging you will want on display.
Why collectors love them
- Exclusive artwork on the outside, and often on the inside too.
- Retailer exclusives: some shops order their own version that you cannot buy anywhere else.
- Finishes from matte to glossy, and sometimes a sleeve over the whole case (full slip) or a cover with a 3D effect (lenticular).
- A beautiful shelf: metal is heavier than plastic and looks more solid.
From the outside a steelbook is the size of a standard disc case, so it sits on the shelf next to your other films.
Limited runs
Limited editions sell out, and afterwards they often cost more than at release. Some numbered editions are listed by sellers at up to twice the price. That doesn't happen with regular discs. But above all, you buy a steelbook for the film and its art.
How to look after one
- Keep it in a clear sleeve or a rigid protective case.
- Keep it out of direct sunlight so the colours do not fade.
- Store it upright, away from anything that could fall on it.
